Amazing performance from Lady Bowthorpe in G3 Betfred Valiant Fillies' Stakes

The mile G3 Betfred Valiant Stakes saw a very impressive success for four-year-old 12/1 Lady Bowthrope (William Jarvis/Kieran Shoemark).

The four-year-old brought up the rear as the field entered the straight, but she began to make rapid headway two furlongs out and took the lead entering the final furlong. She stayed on resolutely to win by four and three-quarter lengths from Farzeen (Roger Varian/David Egan, 25/1).

William Jarvis said: “I have always thought Lady Bowthorpe was good. She has been unlucky not to have won more races, to be honest – things haven’t always panned out for her, but she is smart. It is nice to have a good one. All credit to James Toller, because he said we should run her in that race.

“She’s been a little bit unlucky this season. Ryan Moore had no run in a handicap at Newmarket on her, and things didn’t really work out last time at Pontefract for her, so she’s done what we always hoped she could do here. I am thrilled with her. She is the second best filly by Nathaniel in training in Newmarket [behind Enable]!

“I left it to Kieran and said, ride it how you find it; just get her into a nice rhythm. She has swept by the whole field, hasn’t she? She looked impressive. She has got a valuable Group Three victory against her name; I don’t know what we ill do next. Her half-brother, Speaking Colours, is very useful, and her half-sister won nicely for Marco Botti at Newmarket yesterday.”

Kieran Shoemark said: “I just missed the break, and had to accept it and sit last. They went a nice, even gallop and we were able to get a good run through. She is improving, and is relatively lightly raced for a four-year-old filly. I haven’t ridden her on the track this year, but I have done a bit of homework on her, and she has always impressed me at home. I think she could be competitive in a grade up from this as well.

“I rode her a couple of times late last year and she was always doing a fraction too much. She seems to have grown up, and she dropped the bridle nicely then and relaxed, and ran all the way through the line. I am sure a mile and a quarter won’t be an issue.”
