Rose Hip holds on

Rose Hip (Tony Carroll/Tom Marquand) justified 2/1 favouritism in the Fillies’ Handicap over five furlongs.

The five-year-old Acclamation mare took the lead just inside the final furlong and looked set for a comfortable success. She had to work hard however, holding on by a head from the fast-finishing Ishvara (Robert Cowell/Oisin Murphy, 22/1).

Jockey Tom Marquand said: “I was pretty lucky on Rose Hip last year; I was getting on her on all the right days and she struck up a string of wins pretty nicely. She is game, she is tough, and she has done really well for having that winter under her belt. I know she has had a couple of runs this season but this is the first time I have been back on board her.

“To be honest, even the Ascot five furlongs might be a touch stiff for her, but also in that grade nothing could quite take her far enough. They took me to the furlong pole and forced my hand to commit and she got a little bit lonely in front, but she was always going enough, which was nice. I would be very surprised if she didn’t step up another grade again. It suits her when they go hard and she can just get towed off and not be too keen.

“I knew she would be tough in front if something came back to her, which it did ultimately. I am really pleased to ride winners like this for Tony [Carroll, trainer] because he is such a massive supporter, and we have so much luck round places like Bath and Chepstow and it probably goes largely unnoticed. To ride a nice Ascot winner for him is a pleasure.”
